The Science, the Hype and Why Everyone Is Talking About Them
Peptides have quickly become one of the biggest conversations in wellness, recovery and longevity. They are being discussed for everything from injury repair and body composition to sleep, skin, energy and healthy ageing.
But what exactly are peptides? Why are some already used as established medicines while others remain unapproved? And why have they suddenly become so popular?
Here is the science, without the sensationalism.
What are peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids: the same building blocks that make up proteins. Many occur naturally in the body and work as signalling molecules, carrying instructions between cells and helping to regulate important biological processes.
A useful way to understand them is to imagine a lock and key. A peptide acts as the key and a particular receptor on a cell acts as the lock. When the right peptide reaches the right receptor, it can activate or suppress a specific biological pathway.
This is why different peptides can have completely different effects. One may influence appetite, another collagen production, another growth-hormone signalling and another the body's response to tissue damage.
Peptides are not automatically experimental or unsafe. Insulin is a peptide hormone, and several GLP-1 medicines are peptide-based treatments. Oxytocin and certain fertility and growth-hormone medicines are also peptides. The important question is not simply whether something is a peptide, but which peptide it is, what evidence supports it and how it has been manufactured.
What are peptides being researched for?
The current interest spans a wide range of potential applications:
Tissue repair and recovery, including tendons, ligaments and muscle
Metabolic health, appetite regulation and body composition
Mitochondrial function, cellular energy and exercise capacity
Collagen production, skin quality and hair health
Sleep, cognition and stress regulation

Some of these applications are already supported by strong clinical evidence for specific licensed medicines. Others are based largely on laboratory research, animal studies or small early-stage human trials. Those are very different levels of evidence and should never be treated as interchangeable.
Why aren't all peptides FDA approved?
It is more accurate to say that certain peptides are not FDA approved. Peptide medicines such as insulin, semaglutide and tirzepatide have successfully completed the regulatory process for specific medical indications.
In July 2026, the FDA’s advisory committee recommended that these six peptides be added to the Section 503A Bulks List:
BPC-157 – tissue repair, wound healing and injury recovery
TB-500 – soft-tissue repair, mobility and inflammation
KPV – inflammatory, gut and skin conditions
MOTS-c – mitochondrial function and metabolic health
Semax – cognition and neurological conditions
Epitalon – sleep, circadian regulation and ageing research
Due for review before the end of February 2027
The FDA has announced a second meeting covering:
GHK-Cu – collagen, skin, hair and tissue repair
LL-37 – antimicrobial activity, immunity and wound healing
Melanotan II – pigmentation, appetite and sexual effects
Dihexa acetate – experimental cognition and neuroregeneration research
PEG-MGF – muscle repair and growth signalling
Why have peptides become so popular?
The success of GLP-1 medicines
Semaglutide and tirzepatide made peptide-based treatments visible to the wider public. Their success demonstrated that targeting specific signalling pathways could produce significant, measurable results.
That naturally led to a much bigger question: if peptide pathways can influence appetite and metabolic health so powerfully, what might other peptides be able to do?
What is RETA?
One of the most exciting developments is retatrutide, an investigational “triple agonist” that targets GLP-1, GIP and glucagon receptors. Semaglutide targets GLP-1 alone, while tirzepatide targets GLP-1 and GIP. By adding glucagon-receptor activity, retatrutide may increase energy expenditure alongside reducing appetite and improving metabolic control. In a Phase 3 obesity trial, its highest dose produced an average weight reduction of 28.3% after 80 weeks, rising to 30.3% among participants with a starting BMI of 35 or above who continued for 104 weeks. These early results suggest retatrutide could potentially deliver greater weight loss and broader metabolic benefits than current GLP-1 treatments

Quality, sourcing and professional guidance matter
Peptides are highly sensitive compounds, and products bought online or off your gym bro, can vary significantly in identity, strength, purity and sterility. An attractive package or label does not guarantee that a vial contains the correct peptide, or that it is safe for human use.
A reputable supplier should provide independent, batch-specific third-party testing that verifies:
The identity of the peptide
Purity and peptide-related impurities
The amount contained within the vial
Sterility and microbial contamination
Endotoxin levels
Appropriate manufacturing, storage and handling peptides.
It is equally important to seek advice from an appropriately qualified medical professional before considering any peptide therapy. Peptides can affect hormones, blood glucose, blood pressure, fertility, immune activity and other biological pathways. Once mixed, peptides are generally less stable and can degrade when exposed to heat, light, repeated temperature changes, contamination or excessive agitation.
